Nadi dosha explained: what it is and what it isn't

Why the same nadi scores 0 out of 8 in guna milan, how common it is, and how to think about it calmly.

By 36gud Editorial · · 1 min read

Nadi is the heaviest koota in guna milan, worth 8 of the 36 points. It's also all-or-nothing: different nadis score 8, the same nadi scores 0. That 0 is traditionally called nadi dosha.

The three nadis

Each of the 27 nakshatras belongs to one of three nadis, Adi, Madhya or Antya, in a repeating pattern. You can see the full list on our Nadi koota page.

How common is it?

Because there are three nadis spread evenly across nakshatras, roughly one in three random pairs shares a nadi. It is not rare.

What tradition says

Classical texts associate nadi with health and lineage. Many traditions also describe exceptions, for example when both people share the same nakshatra but different padas, or the same rashi with different nakshatras. These exception rules vary between traditions. Our matching tool checks the commonly cited ones (same rashi with different nakshatra, same nakshatra with different rashi or pada) and shows the outcome on a separate line. The raw score is never changed, and the rule set is labelled as pending specialist validation.

A calmer way to think about it

Nadi dosha is a traditional category, not a medical finding. It cannot tell you anything about actual health or genetics. A doctor can. If nadi matters to your family, discuss it with an astrologer you trust, alongside everything else you know about the person.
