What is Guna Milan? The 36-point system, explained plainly

How Ashtakoota guna milan works, what each of the eight kootas measures, what a score of 18 or 26 really means, and what it cannot tell you.

Guna milan (also called Ashtakoota milan) is the most common way North Indian families compare two kundlis before a marriage. It produces a single number out of 36, but that number is the sum of eight separate checks, and each one says something different.

Where the 36 points come from

Every koota looks at the Moon's position at birth: its sign (rashi) and lunar mansion (nakshatra). Nothing else in the chart is used.

Koota Points What it traditionally looks at
Varna 1 Spiritual temperament
Vashya 2 Mutual attraction and influence
Tara 3 Harmony of birth stars
Yoni 4 Physical and intimate nature
Graha Maitri 5 Mental friendship between sign lords
Gana 6 Temperament (Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa)
Bhakoot 7 Family welfare and prosperity
Nadi 8 Health and lineage

Because the heaviest kootas, nadi (8) and bhakoot (7), are all-or-nothing, a single difference can move the total by 7 or 8 points.

What does the score mean?

Traditionally:

  • Below 18 is considered low.
  • 18–24 is considered acceptable.
  • 25–32 is considered good.
  • Above 32 is considered very high.

Many families also look at nadi and bhakoot separately, because a 0 in either is traditionally called a dosha. Some traditions have exception (parihara) rules that cancel these doshas in specific cases. Our free tool shows every koota separately, checks the commonly cited Nadi and Bhakoot exceptions, and shows the result on a separate line, without changing the raw score.

Read Nadi and Bhakoot first

Together they carry 15 of the 36 points. A practical order is: check Nadi, then Bhakoot, then the total. An 18/36 with both clean is often preferred over a 27/36 with an uncancelled Nadi dosha.

The 36/36 myth

A true 36/36 is rare. If a calculator keeps showing perfect scores, its logic is likely broken, or two names simply mapped to the same syllable group in name-based matching. Half points such as 28.5 are normal: Tara gives 1.5 per direction, and Vashya and Graha Maitri can give 0.5.

Why swapping groom and bride changes the score

Varna, vashya and gana are calculated directionally: the groom's and bride's roles are not interchangeable in the traditional tables. So a Rohini groom with a Hasta bride can score differently from a Hasta groom with a Rohini bride.

What guna milan cannot tell you

A guna score is traditional astrological information. It has not been shown to predict whether a marriage will be happy. It cannot tell you about values, kindness, how someone handles money or conflict, or whether two families will get along.

Use the score as one input your family may care about, never as the only reason to accept or decline a rishta.
