Why is my guna milan 28.5 and not a whole number?

Half points in kundli matching are normal and precise. Here is exactly where they come from, and why a "perfect 36" should make you suspicious.

People often message us asking whether a score like 28.5/36 is a bug. It isn't. Three of the eight kootas can award half points.

Where half points come from

Koota Possible scores Why
Tara (3) 0, 1.5, 3 Counted in both directions, 1.5 points each way
Vashya (2) 0, 0.5, 1, 2 Some group pairings are traditionally "partly" compatible
Graha Maitri (5) 0, 0.5, 1, 3, 4, 5 Neutral-and-enemy lords score 0.5

Tara, step by step

Count from the bride's nakshatra to the groom's (inclusive) and divide by 9. A remainder of 3, 5 or 7 is traditionally unfavourable. Then do the same from the groom to the bride. Each favourable direction adds 1.5. One good direction and one bad gives exactly 1.5, which is where most ".5" totals come from.

Why a perfect 36 is rare

Getting 36 needs every koota at its maximum at once, including different nadis, a favourable sign distance, matching yoni animals and friendly sign lords. Few real pairs manage that. If a site shows 36/36 often, its calculation is likely broken, or in name-based matching, two names simply fell into the same syllable group.

What to read first

The total is a starting point, not a verdict. In practice:

  1. Check Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7 points) first.
  2. If either is 0, see whether a traditional exception applies. Our matching tool checks the common ones.
  3. Only then look at the total.

Pehle Nadi dekhiye, phir Bhakoot, aur uske baad total score. Agar dono saaf hain toh 18/36 bhi kaam ka hai.
