Don't know the exact birth time? What a kundli can and can't tell you

Without a birth time, lagna and houses can't be calculated, but the Moon sign, nakshatra and guna milan often still can. Here's how to tell.

Many people, especially those born before hospital records were common, only know their birth date. That's fine, but it changes what a kundli can honestly show.

What needs an exact time

The lagna (ascendant), the sign rising in the east at the moment of birth, changes roughly every two hours. Every house in the chart is counted from it. So without a reliable time:

  • Lagna is unavailable.
  • Houses (bhavas) are unavailable.
  • Anything based on houses, such as Manglik analysis by house position, is unavailable.

Some calculators quietly assume 12:00 noon and show a full chart as if it were exact. We don't. A chart built on a guessed time can look precise while being wrong.

What usually still works

The Moon moves about 13° a day, roughly one nakshatra. So on most days:

  • The Moon's sign is the same all day.
  • The Moon's nakshatra is either the same all day or one of two.

Since guna milan uses only the Moon, matching is often still possible. Our free kundli checks the whole day and lists every possible nakshatra, so you can see whether it's settled.

Approximate times

If you know the time roughly ("early morning", "around 7"), choose Approximate. We check one hour either side and mark anything that changes in that window as uncertain.

Rectification

Astrologers sometimes estimate a birth time from life events ("rectification"). That's an interpretation, not a calculation, and different astrologers can reach different answers. If you use a rectified time, treat results that depend on it with the same caution.
